Architecture Prototyping

Screen Shot 2014-11-13 at 11.34.35 AMAs part of Justin Sorenson’s Engineering Problem Solving class, a student designed a home on SketchUp with the intent to print out a 3D model of the finished design.

The home was complex, realistic, and very well-modeled in CAD. His hope was to print out the house with as much detail as was shown in his model. In his first try, the model’s roof lines did not print accurately. He then reduced the model complexity and simplified the house shape.

Upon printing, he encountered the same errors again. Part of the problem solving process involved analyzing the polygons and the information associated with them. The polygons that were not printing correctly were mistakenly labeled as interior faces rather than exterior faces.

Sorenson and the student are now in the process of checking and correcting these polygons.
